What is an FAA Neuropsychological Evaluation?

An FAA Neuropsychological evaluation is an objective means used by the FAA to determine an airman’s cognitive and psychological ability to identify if there are any risks associated with the aviator or passengers.

These tests may be administered to obtain or renew your medical certification, such as if you have a disqualifying condition (e.g., ADHD) or experienced a disqualifying medical or psychological event (e.g., stroke, substance abuse).

Dr. Becker is equipped to administer your FAA Neuropsychological Evaluation since he is FAA Certified and HIMS Trained.

What Should I Expect?

1
Get Referred for Neuropsychological Evaluation

If your Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) identifies an issue that prevents you from receiving a medical certification, you should receive a letter from the FAA that refers you for a neuropsychological evaluation.

This letter means you need to set up an evaluation with an FAA-certified & HIMS-trained neuropsychologist. Please send him all the necessary paperwork prior to your evaluation.

2
Take the FAA Neuropsychological Evaluation

The FAA neuropsychological evaluation includes several cognitive tasks to ensure there are no issues that may pose a risk to the safety of the airman, the passengers, and/or the general public.

Some cognitive tasks you may encounter can test attention span, processing speed, memory, problem-solving, mood, and personality.

Depending on the reason for your referral, these tests can last anywhere from an hour to the entire day.

3
Receive Report

After your test, your responses will be scored and reviewed in detail. Dr. Becker will examine patterns of strengths and weaknesses to determine if there is anything of aeromedical significance.

When the scores are finalized, they are submitted in a report to your AME.
