Find the Help You Need with a Neuropsych Evaluation

If you or a loved one have experienced an injury or illness that affects the brain, your doctor may refer you for a neuropsych assessment.

Some common reasons you may be referred to a neuropsych include brain injury, concussion, epilepsy, or neurodegenerative conditions. These evaluations can also be useful in older populations to distinguish normal age-related changes from signs of dementia.

While these assessments may be intimidating, Dr. Becker is committed to providing you with compassionate care while providing valuable insight into your cognitive state.

What is a Neuropsych Evaluation?

Neuropsych assessments can be daunting, but there is no need for concern. The process is straightforward, and Dr. Becker will explain each step thoroughly and kindly.

These evaluations typically include 4 steps from start to finish:

1
Review of Medical and Other Records

To fully understand the cause of a neuropsych condition, Dr. Becker needs to understand the whole story. Reviewing your medical records provides insight into other details that might not come up organically.

2
Interview with You and/or a Loved One

After reviewing your medical records, a clinical interview will allow you and Dr. Becker to discuss your history and the symptoms you’re experiencing more in-depth.

With your permission, a loved one, such as a family member, close friend, or caregiver, may be invited to interview as well. This can provide another perspective and give further insight into your symptoms.

3
Administration of Examination

These individualized exams typically last 4-6 hours with breaks. You will complete standardized tests through different mediums, such as oral questions, paper and pencil responses, or physical object manipulation like blocks or puzzles.

These different types of questions test several parts of the brain like attention, language, memory, reasoning, problem-solving, sensory-motor skills, and others.

4
Follow-up Appointment to Discuss Results

Dr. Becker will score your tests and then provide an interpretation of your results coupled with knowledge of your medical history.

During your follow-up appointment, he will discuss his feedback with you. Based on the assessment results, Dr. Becker will provide recommendations for modifying your lifestyle to help you live your fullest life.
